The photographs of the Austrian artist Peter Köllerer lead us into London‘s “Inner City” without showing the well-known icons of the center. Instead, we see irritatingly anonymous views of a sensed interior city space. Köllerer traces, with his surrealistic and sensible semiotic eye, the signs scarcely hidden on the surface of the cityscape. This non-representative “interior city” space, that repeatedly evades all attempts at planning, shows itself in gaps, the interstices and abysses, in the unnecessary barricades and unsuspected openings, the thoughtlessly mended and the helplessly designed.
Köllerers book can also be read as a photo-novel, allowing the spectator the skepticism of the detective as well as the enchantment of the flaneur.
