The present edition offers a comprehensive survey of the work of Franz Gassner from the last two decades. Franz Gassner’s painting compositions seek reduction in form and color, work with rhythmically woven symbols on a mostly monochrome ground, and augment large, thematically conceived work cycles. In a meditatively unfolding, light and dark series of images, Gassner ventures back to simple, structural forms of painting; his abstractions at the same time open up dimensions of transcendence. The glaze-painted planes of image compositions connect a modern lightness and an archaism; in the serial paintings the progression to abstraction becomes transparent until finally they ask very discrete existential questions that refer to the spiritual and philosophical background of Franz Gassner’s oeuvre.

Franz Gassner has lived and worked since 1966 as a freelance artist in Lustenau.
